The collecting community was delighted in November last year, a Swiss auction house listed an incredible, possibly unique Patek Philippe ref.1599P made for Gübelin. Those of us who got to see the watch in person in Geneva and who saw the watch online, revelled in the incredible beauty of this watch with its large square case with curved lugs and very special and unique dial, with a two tone, almost mirror like sunburst sector finish and applied gold Breguet numerals. For many of us, it was the highlight of the autumn auction calendar and delight to see such an outstanding and interesting time-only piece.
We’re delighted to introduce this rather beautiful cousin to that piece, this possibly unique watch made by/for the retailer themselves under their own branding, with “E. Gübelin, Lucerne”adorning the otherwise identical Stern Frères dial with the same captivating mirror like sunburst two tone, sector finish and applied Breguet and pyramid hour markers, a most unusual and unique design. In this piece, the very similar case is made of steel with gold rounded lugs, matching the numerals on the dial, providing a nice point of contrast. Alas this piece does not feature a Patek Philippe movement but instead a a Gübelin 17 jewels, manually wound movement, which is in great condition both aesthetically and mechanically, having just been serviced. Even the original cut mineral crystal is gorgeous and feels like its prestigious counterpart. It provides collectors who missed out on the spectacular 1599P the chance to own that feeling and look, in a very wearable, highly attractive and special piece with a whole lot of character.
