Available now this unique, Stainless Steel, Automatic Self-Winding Patek Philippe ref.2585A is not only one of the rarest Stainless Steel Patek Philippe ever created but one of the rarest automatic watches ever, period.
Patek Philippe historically produced very few stainless steel watches and for those few references which were, steel cases are typically the rarest examples of each reference respectively. This pattern is visible across a number of references, most notably the 1518 in steel also the ref.130 and 1463, ubiquitous in yellow gold and continues in other time-only Calatrava such as the ref. 96, 530 or 570, becoming an entirely different proposition when encountered in steel, for which the rare steel examples have reached incredible levels in auction. In each application generally, steel was not an alternative; it was an exception and the ref. 2585A represents one of the most extreme expressions of this philosophy.
What stands the ref.2585A apart is that it doesn’t form a rare steel sect of an otherwise wider produced reference. It stands alone as a dedicated reference, made only in steel, with a unique case made only for this reference; that very concept represents a unique exception in the Patek Philippe vintage canon of which the significance cannot be understated!
That is before considering that it is the only reference Patek Philippe ever made to utilise their first self-winding calibre 12-600AT, widely regarded as the nicest automatic movement of the era; the manufacture reserved this important calibre for its most important Calatrava in fine metal, most notably the 2526, hence the principle of a steel self-winding Patek Philippe from this era was thought impossible until the first example of the 2585A appeared to market two decades ago and for which still to date, only 3 examples are known of this rare bird.
We will be publishing a full extended article on the ref.2585A on our website tomorrow evening, December 19th, in which we will be delving into the history and significance of the reference, comparing each of the known examples and their condition, the calibre 12-600AT and the brands limited production in steel.
