Available now, this exceptional Markowski case design ref. 2518 is the only known example in this unique configuration. Only half a dozen examples of this reference are known in yellow gold and rose gold respectively, making it one of the rarest form-shaped vintage watches produced by Patek Philippe, and among the largest, with its wide case and oversized architectural “Pyramid” or “Toblerone” lugs, a far more befitting nickname for such a Swiss masterpiece!
It is also among the rarest Markowski-cased PP's. The celebrated Casemaker is synonymous with outstanding form-shaped pieces, including several Gilbert Albert references as well as the highly sought after ref. 2441 “Eiffel Tower” and 2442 “Banana.” In comparison, the 2518 'Toblerone' is considerably rarer, having been produced in far smaller numbers and with fewer known examples, and comparatively represents a compelling value proposition. Notably, the last ref. 2518 to appear at auction was approximately 15 years ago, such is the rarity.
Enhancing its rarity further, this example features a confirmed original handset different from those few others known. Rather than the typical feuille hands, it was fitted with thick faceted baton hands, which are more harmonious and perfectly complement the faceted angular hour markers and case. The same hands were used on other references with similar dial designs.
While most ref. 2518 were sold in the 1950's, this example was most interestingly was sold in 1977, likely as a special request assembled from NOS. This late retail date explains the unique hand configuration, the calatrava crown, the movement number recall engraved on the exterior caseback, and its outstanding condition.
The watch sings with bold mid-century 1950s design. The satin opaline engraved enamel dial, faceted square markers, and hands continue the angular language of the case, whose thick, sharp lugs, warm oxidised gold tone, and crisp hallmark are particularly impressive. Its size is remarkable for the era, offering strong wrist presence.
